Dissolution of Marriage

Divorce is more than just a break up.  It involves delicate issues such as custody and support of your children, division of your property and debts, and possibly maintenance (alimony). It is a difficult process for those going through it, as emotions are running rampant.  You don’t have to go through this alone.  Divorces may be contested or uncontested.  If uncontested, it means you and spouse have agreed to everything before the divorce is filed.  Although she can only “represent” and give advice to one of you, Attorney Laurie Dodd can prepare all the paperwork for you and your spouse to sign, and most times you and your spouse may not even be required to appear in court.  Uncontested divorces are usually billed at a flat fee starting at $750.00 plus the filing fee for the court.

If, however, you and your spouse are not able to come to an agreement and the divorce is contested, it will be billed on an hourly basis.  Laurie can represent you in fighting for what is in the best interests of your children regarding custody and visitation and child support, what is best for you in the division of property, allocation of debts, and possibly maintenance and attorney’s fees.  The parties to a contested divorce can settle at any time during the case, or Laurie will fight for you in trial.

Missouri law does not require grounds or fault for divorce.  The only requirement is that there are “irreconcilable differences causing the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.”  Missouri is not a 50/50 state;  the division of property is subject to “equitable distribution.”  If you and your spouse are experience irreconcilable differences, contact Laurie Dodd.
